|
- 1. To breed rare varieties of grouper:
- Queensland grouper
- Panther grouper
- Estuary grouper
- Coral trout grouper
- Bar cheeked trout grouper
- spiny lobster (three species)
- 2. To revive the local marine environment that surrounds Koh Yao Island. The first step of this process is extensive research of the underwater area surrounding the island, in order to determine where to release both lobster and grouper fry. Part of all produce from the breeding system of the MRI will be put back into the ocean in appropriate sites surrounding Koh Yaow. The MRI is also establishing a center for educational training to help local fisherman manage their marine resources more effectively for the future.
-
3. To expand the impact of SDRF community development programs for fishing communities in the area. At the present time, the SDRF has enabled a number of communities to get back on their feet by reconstructing their livelihood of raising or “growing out” grouper and lobster in floating cages in lagoons and estuaries around Koh Yao Island.
- 4. To make profits which will be used by the SDRF to expand its development programs in a number of areas such as education, fisheries, forestry, at risk communities and environmental concerns.
